Notes:

  • Vyasa- the Mahabharata writer/creator
  • Ganesha- Vyasa's scribe
  • Devavrata/Bhishma- Shanantu and Ganga's son; the second name came after he made a terrible vow in order for his dad to marry Satyavati
  • King Shanantu wanted to marry Satyavati but he wanted Devavrata to be king and not Vyasa so her fisherman father did not allow the marriage
  • Amba- she will reappear in Bhishma's life towards the end; blames Brishma for her troubles; Shiva gives her the tools to defeat Bhishma in another reincarnation
  • Vyasa is called upon to have children to carry on the throne; he is repulsive enough that his kids are born with abnormalities 
  • Dhritarashtra is born blind
  • Pandu is born pale; becomes king 
  • Vidura is the human form of Dharma
  • Kunti is the wife of Pandu; she had a son before marriage and his name is Karna
  • Madri is also the wife of Pandu
  • Pandava brothers all considered to be Pandu's sons but their fathers were gods 
  • After Pandu died Dhritarashtra is placed on the throne(or was he placed on the throne when Pandu put himself in exile to escape the curse); he married Gandhari who had 100 sons called the Kauravas
  • Bhima of the Pandavas and Duryodhana of the Kauravas; the more powerful of the brothers; the leaders; the main ones who engage in petty fights
  • Drona is a teacher brought in by Bhishma
  • The Pandava brothers Yudhishthira, Bhima, and Arjuna excel under Drona much to the chagrin of the Kauravas
  • Arjuna and Karna battle without knowing the truth; they argue and Karna takes Duryodhana's side
  • Duryodhana's jealousy of the Pandavas is out of control and he makes plans to get rid of them

Week 2 Story: The Sleepy Koala

Story There once was a sleepy koala who spent most of his time in eucalyptus trees. One day when he was eating some eucalyptus leaves he came across a branch that did not look like the others. He asked " what shall I do with this odd branch? " He thought maybe he should try to eat it, although it didn't look very tasty. He thought another time to throw it down into the river where it could float away and bother a different creature. To his surprise the branch once answered back. It said " if you, sleepy koala, want me out of your sight just bury me under some dirt where the sun shines and I will never bother you in this form again ." The koala was hesitant. It would require a lot of work for him to leave his tree to bury this branch. He was very busy with his 22 hours of sleep and 2 hours of eating leaves.
