Week 13 Story: Value

Image
When Values Are Uneven Image Link There once was an administrator charged with our country's highest honor- protecting our environment. Lisa McCarthy valued all of Earth's systems and it was her duty to make sure others understood such value. Under great leadership, the environmental administration was able to harmonize natural resources and industry. As the saying goes, we never know a good thing until it's gone. One day, the wealthy industry men got together and decided they did not want to pay the true cost of using the Earth's resources. So, through suspicious elections and dubious appointments, Scotty Prune was now the one tasked with defending the planet.  This was devastating to those who knew how precious the environment is. They thought surely the higher government would do more than open a window and appoint the first person they saw to be the administrator. Over time, the citizens’ concerns were repeatedly validated. Scotty Prune cared not ab...

Week 11 Story: Parijata

Image
Parijata Tree also known as Indian Coral Tree Image Link From my place in the high heavens, under the watchful care of Sachi, I observed the happenings in the universe around me. Over the years I grew a fascination with Earth. The ability of its residents to both awe and disgust me was incredible. When the humans showed kindness and love, all I wanted was to experience those positive emotions with them. Sometimes when a special few had the opportunity to visit the heavens, I'd stretch my branches as close to them as possible. They were just so interesting! I wanted to tell my precious caretaker Sachi my longing to visit Earth but could never work up the courage. She was so attached to me I felt terrible to say out loud I wished to leave her side, even if it were to be a quick separation. One day, when Indra was sitting under my leaves, I requested that if such an occasion came up for me to be sent to Earth he would allow me to go. After some contemplation he agreed. We b...

Week 9 Story: Marble

Image
Marble Image Link Story: In New York City, Marble was the son of an important figure in the entertainment industry. Marble looked up to his father and aspired to be exactly like him. When Marble wasn't accepted into his dream university he was devastated. He thought in that moment he would never be as great as his father, but Marble thought to turn this slight misstep into an opportunity. Instead of becoming just like his father, Marble was determined to become the greatest in his own field. He sought out the legendary modeling guru Benjamin. Benjamin was uninterested in teaching Marble his ways though and sent him off. Undeterred once again, Marble decided to learn from Benjamin by doing what everyone else does. Starting with his Wikipedia page and reading through interviews and company reports, Marble quickly learned what it would take to become a modeling executive through self study.  One day some of Benjamin's interns were trying to get in touch with an up and c...

Week 7 Story: Brother Bear

Image
Denali National Park in Alaska Image Link After a long journey across the Alaskan wilderness that included meeting friendly moose and deadly hunters, the two bear friends Koda and Kenai decide to rest at the base of the mountain. Tomorrow they will meet the shaman Tanana at the top, where the lights touch the earth. It is said that the lights house the spirits that guide all living things. "Let's see if there's fish to catch in this stream. I'm hungry as a bear!" said Koda. Kenai rolls his eyes at the joke, "Okay, hopefully we find some, we'll need the energy to climb the mountain tomorrow." "Oh I am ready. I get to see my mom, you get to see your brother and we can all live together," Koda said with confidence. Kenai nodded his head but knew the younger bear cub didn't fully understand why they were journeying to the mountain where the land was closest to the northern lights. Kenai was there when his brother died, and was s...

Week 5 Story: Talking Into the Sunset Podcast

Image
A microphone to represent both Sita singing and the podcast in my story. Image  Link Author's Note: I watched the film  Sita Sings the Blues  by Nina Paley. The movie follows the Ramayana from the point of view of Sita, along with some occasional interludes showcasing Nina Paley's personal experiences. I liked the movie as a whole but the narrators really stood out to me. They reminded me of a podcast so I decided to write my story in the form of a podcast transcript. The movie was already a shortened and less detailed version of the Ramayana than the readings, so my own story is inspired by very little of the original details. The sister is loosely Sita who has struggles she needs to work through. The sister's boyfriend is the dramatic and not all that helpful Rama. It didn't turn out quite the way I wanted it to, it was a challenge for me to come up with an original story that still follows the Ramayana. Hopefully it's still an interesting read though. S...

Week 3 Story: A Mountain Puppy

Image
A puppy in the snow Image Link Story: The mountains were home to a small, friendly puppy. The puppy had many dear friends in the mountains that he played with all the time. There was the strong rabbit who could pull the puppy out of any situation. There was a horse that could always calm the puppy down when he became too rambunctious. One day the puppy was walking through the trees trying to find something to play with since his friends were busy. He came across a tree that had one last leaf left at the very top. The puppy decided that he really needed that leaf and tried to climb the tree. He found that he could not get up the tree far enough to reach the leaf, but he kept trying. After one particularly ambitious leap the puppy fell harshly on the ground. He cried out in pain, hoping one of his friends would hear him and come help. At last the strong bunny and calm horse found the puppy but they could not do anything to help him. Then th...

Week 2 Story: The Sleepy Koala

Image
Story There once was a sleepy koala who spent most of his time in eucalyptus trees. One day when he was eating some eucalyptus leaves he came across a branch that did not look like the others. He asked " what shall I do with this odd branch? " He thought maybe he should try to eat it, although it didn't look very tasty. He thought another time to throw it down into the river where it could float away and bother a different creature. To his surprise the branch once answered back. It said " if you, sleepy koala, want me out of your sight just bury me under some dirt where the sun shines and I will never bother you in this form again ." The koala was hesitant. It would require a lot of work for him to leave his tree to bury this branch. He was very busy with his 22 hours of sleep and 2 hours of eating leaves. Nonetheless he decided it was important to get rid of the strange branch once and for all. He climbed down his tree and followed the branc...
